PokerStars said that it will apply for a full five-year sports betting licence in Denmark after being awarded a temporary one-year permit.

The company, said it plans to add betting to its existing poker operations in the country in the near future, with casino games to be launched later in 2016.

“Online betting is an exciting pastime for sports fans and provides a way for them to put their passion and knowledge to the test in competition with friends and other fans,” said Eric Hollreiser, vice-president of corporate communications for Amaya, PokerStars’ owner.

“We’re pleased to offer sports betting under a licence that ensures local oversight of the industry and allows PokerStars to bring its gaming expertise and high standards of integrity, compliance and security to Danish bettors.

“This furthers Amaya’s commitment to the responsible growth of online gaming by supporting local regulation that protects players, creates a viable, competitive marketplace and provides revenue for local governments.”

While Ladbrokes pulled out of Denmark earlier this year, citing a lack of “significant growth”, the country has seen reasonable expansion in online gaming each year since Danske Spil’s monopoly was ended in 2012.
